WORLD TRAVELERS AND IPHONE USERS, BEWARE

Last week I received my AT&T phone bill for $2700!!! $2000 from data transfer alone while I was on my trip in Asia in February. FYI, your iPhone is set to check mail every ten minutes or so, and each email download costs $50-$150.

I will definitely be calling AT&T to inquire and get to the bottom of this. When I signed up, I requested the best international rates. I'll keep you posted on the outcome; I have a feeling this is not the end if the story.

Alex, I hate to say it, but you probably DID get the best rates. Even with an international data plan from AT&T, checking emails every 10 minutes (which you can change the settings on this) incurrs obscene charges of $0.02/kb. For a 1MB file this is $20! Each ping you incurr a few dozen to a hundred KBs or $2.

There's no fixed rate available on international data like we have in the US, although there are data packages you can buy (which I don't know if you did this or not).

AT&T posted this info regarding international roaming with an iPhone.

Thank you for your input askmrlee. I learned the hard way after an hour on the phone with customer service with ATT and they had agreed to take off at least 50% off the bill- which I am totally happy with. There is infact a program you can sign up for international data, or data package, we will see if it will take care of it.

So the phone statement arrived, I received a credit for $1000... Less than I had hoped for, but it is a thousand dollars..
